We have 4 cats and 2 litterboxes. I know you're supposed to have one for each cat but we can only afford litter for 2! I just keep them clean as much as possible. My cats and I were struggling because they had taken to peeing outside the litterbox. I have a feeling it was my male cat who likes to pee standing up with his paws on the edge of the litter tray. I think he missed a few times. I knew I had to do something because I was getting very tired of cleaning cat pee off the floor. After a lot of research I decided to try this litterbox. It seemed to have good reviews. It's still only been a few days but my cats took to them right away. I was a little worried that my older cat might not get into it if she had to jump up there - but she did with no issues. The next morning after I bought them I saw evidence that they were used and I was SO happy.Assembly was very easy. All you have to do is snap the lid on and it's very sturdy. My oldest cat is about 15 lbs and it held her with no problems. Cleaning so far has also been a breeze. I don't know if they coat the bottom with something but when I cleaned it out the clumps swirled around very easily and came right out. With my old litterbox I'd have huge masses of clay stuck to the bottom that I had to dig out and it hurt my back. With this, even this big clumps of pee scooped right up. I was a little concerned about the scoop because it looked a little flimsy but it actually scooped better than the larger one I had been using. Looks wise it's very sleek looking. The only place I have enough room for the litterboxes is in the kitchen so the old ones were an eye sore. These actually look nice and I don't have open trays of litter sitting in my kitchen. So far, I'm very happy with the purchase. So my beloved canine hasn't had a kitty pal in the home and likes to chop on the poo. I had the litter box that had the strainer where u put a peed pad at the bottom...and used multicat lump n seal. I scooped twice a day and still smelled and had a snacker.lolSo, I bought this and it is A+ ....so great no more poop snacks. No more outrageous smells. I figured out the best way to keep house smelling good. First, purchase this with the top entry so cat can wipe paws after potty time. Then buy pee pads and put one at the bottom of the box and use the unscented white bulk crystal litter. I pd like 25 bucks for 2 bags but this way lasts a month. You still scoop twice a day but no smell till u get scooping. Just make sure after u scoop u mix the litter up so the pee pads will soak up the extra pee.Actual conversation w/ husband:"I'm buying a new litter box, alright?""The current litter box is fine. It holds cat poop. That's all it needs to do.""IT IS NOT FINE, IT DOES NOT HOLD CAT LITTER."Thank god this miracle showed up on the doorstep the next day. My cat is great, but one of his greatest joys in life is scooping litter. He delights in scattering it anywhere that is not the box . His high walled box was ineffectual. The litter trapping mat helped, but the cat has a wicked underhand, throwing past its edges. I couldn't keep a clean bathroom/hallway even with sweeping or roomba-ing daily and had resigned myself to the next 15 years of wearing shoes indoors at all times. Bless my husband, he was either oblivious or indifferent, but I was tired of litter encrusted feet.Enter the IRIS. The cat, although initially wary, took to it well. I figured he might because in the past I had walked by and seen him just laying in his box like it's a bed (he is a really weird cat). I did follow the advice of others in this thread, except I poured ALL the contents of his box into the IRIS, because I had just changed it the night before, so I wouldn't waste a bunch of litter. I did top it off with more though, because this sucker is deep and it just seemed right. He immediately jumped out when I placed him in it twice in the first 30 minutes and I was worried - if this didn't work I didn't know what I would do - so I left him to his own devices and within an hour or so he was back to scooping his little heart out.Details: The lid is good as far as tracking, or so I believe from the granules of litter it is collected, but I have never actually seen the cat climb out so much as he propels himself out like a cannon shot. For reference, he is 4 years old and about 10 - 12 lbs. It is a perfect size for him, not too big and not too small. It is a big litter box for sure, but the litter mat is bigger and the real estate in our condo had long been sacrificed. It is a well styled and way more attractive solution to traditional boxes because you don't have to stare at the contents every time you walk by. The scoop hangs firmly by hooking it into one of the lid grooves on the back side, does not fall off. Couldn't tell you how the lid handles weight, for obvious reasons. It is easy to remove, and seems pretty secure - I don't foresee any issues. Most importantly, there has only been a SINGLE granule of litter found on the bathroom in the last 4 days. I can walk barefoot again. Even my sweet husband begrudgingly admitted that yeah, this was a really good purchase.Kirby rates this 5 stars, two paws up.And that's a good thing. It has a clean, simple line and is very aesthetically pleasing. My cats have been using it for three days now without incident. It boggles my mind why some people said they had an issue with the lids' locking mechanism. It's pretty straightforward, just make sure you line up all three protruding pieces. My 14lb boy sits on it and no problem so far with the lid dislodging. I'm hanging on to my old box for another week, but I feel fairly confident that we'll be keeping this one.EDIT: after watching my older female struggle a little more than I was comfortable with getting out, I decided to send this box back and continue using the one we had. I still feel this is a good litter box, and she’s not old yet, but she is a bit overweight and has never been all that coordinated. I would still recommend this litter box to anyone who asked about it.Having tried a regular litterbox, a 4 foot long under-the-bed tupperware used as a litterbox, a high walled litterbox, a cabinet litterbox, and a covered litterbox with a door, this is by far the best. The only thing we haven't tried yet is one of those auto-cleaning robot litterboxes, and hopefully now we won't have to. The cats can't kick litter out, they can enter and exit easily, it's simple to clean, airs out sufficiently, keeps internals out of sight, and the lid catches most of the litter they would track out on their paws. Our 14 year old, large breed (maine coon & calico) cat loved it. I was worried she wouldn't fit very well, or want to jump up on the box. Nope. And this is her first top down box, give it a try. Keeps most of litter off the floor and the mat does the rest. Scoop is too small, but not a deal breaker.1. DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A LITTER BOX — unless you're right next to it! more like a stylish bin of some sort, instead of what might otherwise be beat-up, stained, dirty & dusty pee/poo box in it's place. the model i got (white, with beige top) matches the mid-century rip-off credenza that it's next to.2. CAT USES IT! she's about nine years old, but despite her "mature" status, this is easy for her to get into and out of. roomy enough for her to do her business.3. IT WORKS! the grooved cover catches most of the litter that i would otherwise be sweeping up off the floor, and the little mat i have at the base catches the rest. only seeing the odd grain here and there.4. EASY TO CLEAN. the lid comes off easy, and i just turn it sideways, and tap it a couple of times to clear the litter grains back into the box. interestingly: i am not scraping clumps off the inner walls either. YMMV depending on your cat's habits (and litter), but this is SO much cleaner that the disgusting box she was using before.5. other notes:a) there are two model sizes from IRIS USA. i have the larger version with the scoop hook on the inside. definitely recommend getting the larger size, so your cat has more room.b) NO SMELLS with Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal, FWIW. but i usually have no idea my cat has eliminated in it until i check. so for those who still smell cat poo -- could be diet, could be litter.c) also interesting: she was ridiculously loud with her old box, i would be awoken at night from the scratching sounds — she is entirely silent with this. it's not soundproof of course, but i have no idea she's even in it.We have amassed 4 different types/brands of litter boxes and this top-entry box is our 5th since we adopted our cat from a shelter 8 yrs ago. All other boxes are "walk-in" boxes and are still in use in different locations (e.g. at the cottage and in the car)What we like about this new box: (1) it's more compact in overall dimensions compared to the equivalent walk-in box of the same size, yet, it's roomy inside; (2) the form and colours are more appealing; it doesn't even look like a litter box which is great as we use it in our home office; (3) the interior floor is absolutely flat making it easy for scooping; (4) the sidewall has no seam which eliminates urine leakage from spraying and contains litter inside the box; (5) the top comes off easily for cleaning, yet it’s solid and stable for a cat to stand on when it's in place; (6) the entry opening is big enough to allow scooping w/o taking the top off on regular basis [see the photo]; and (7) it seems to reduce litter-tracking outside the box.The cons are a few but minor: (i) the supplied scooper is small and its holes are too big for the clumping pine litter that we use; (ii) the oval shape makes it a bit awkward to use a regular square-head scooper; and (iii) Not that it was hard to figure out, but it would have been nice to have a diagram or a half-page of instructions. Our cat has never been very fussy about litter or box types, but she is getting older (almost 12 yrs old). Plus, she had never seen a top-entry litter box before, so we weren't sure how she would react to this box. Well, our worries were totally unnecessary. She figured it out in no time flat! At first she was very cautious and climbed into it very gingerly, but now (=Day 2) she just jumps right into it!It remains to be seen how durable this box is, how long our cat will be able to or willing to jump into it, or if any other flaws will emerge in the near future, but so far both our cat and we are very happy with our purchase.EDIT (2019/05/06): A family member pointed out that we had experimented with 2 more litter boxes in addition to the 5 we use: one was a "Booda Cleanstep Dome" and the other was an "Omega Paw Roll-N-Clean Box". We weren't sure if they were any good, so we purchased them on Kijiji and tested for a week. Unfortunately, neither of them was satisfactory; Booda was huge and didn't reduce litter-tracking and Omega kept spilling litter from the seams, so we quickly resold them on Kijiji. All in all, this IRIS top-entry box is the best so far for our cat and her humans.EDIT (2021/09/13): Our cat just turned 14. She's still using this top-entry boxes. However, she has started to have a bit of trouble jumping out of the box. Her hind leg banged into the top as if she misjudged the height or she failed to jump high enough. We figure it's time to switch her back to walk-in boxes. Also, it's worth noting that we added a 5 lb weight at the top to gain more stability because the box almost toppled over once or twice (that we know of) when her body brushed against the opening while exiting. An oversized or not-so-agile cat may have the same trouble; keep a close eye to avoid any injuries.TWO days after return window closes, the lid starts caving in. Whaaaaat?I honestly was so excited about this box and did a ton of research before getting it. My cat is about 9.5lbs, and has no trouble in and out. Its a little awkward to clean but overall Ive been very happy with it and I ditched her old box. And now the lid doesnt want to properly clip into the box and Im not sure how to rectify this. I can permanently seal it but that will make it very difficult to clean. I cant even find a way to contact the seller. Im bugged. Id expect this from a $20 purchase but $50 felt like more of an investment I guess...especially since I bought one she could grow into since she was less than a year old when I ordered it.I love the concept but Im not impressed.I guess Im left with an overpriced waste bin:(Love this litter box! I needed something covered for my small living space. It is reasonably priced for a more "stylish" looking litter box (and substantially cheaper but comparable to the Modkat box). My kitten had no issues with switching to this style of box.The box I bought was medium in size and was bigger than I thought it would be. The hole in the top is also quite large. For a large, fully grown adult cat I would say you would need to buy the large box.I bought the white with beige lid (cheaper) and spray painted the lid to match my decor better. The scoop that came with it was too small but I love the little hook that clips on the side to hold the scoop.I keep it in the bathroom and use flushable litter so the box is kept very clean. I could see there being an issue if the box isn't cleaned regularly due to the lack of ventilation. I was using clay litter in this but the fumes were too strong in the box so I switched to the natural stuff.I'm going to be purchasing a second bigger box in the near future for my growing boy.Edit: I purchased the bigger box once my cat surpassed 7lbs as the medium was just too small. See photos for the size comparison.
