I've done a LOT of camping over the years, both backpack and car camping, and have seen this kit before but was hesitant to buy it. Now I'm glad I did.The main dishes are PERFECT for the camp environment. The lid functions PERFECTLY as a plate, and the bottom performs the same as a side dish container or a large soup/stew bowl. I'm actually going to buy a second one because of how well they work.So why 4 instead of 5 stars? It's all in the material of the spork. First of all, I have to say that Wildo got it right with the design. An offset spoon from the tines of the fork enable you to eat properly. I would ditch the knife portion, because you really don't use it anyway. Besides, I can't figure out how you're supposed to use the knife part to cut, if your fork is on the same utensil. I have found that using my lock blade pocket knife, which I have had and used for camping and backpacking for almost 30 years. actually works the best when you need to cut something up.(but I have yet to need something like that on the trail. Only camping with a large group). The small fold-a-cup is a good size for "bug juice", and the large cup works great for coffee or tea. My next experiment is to see of the large fold-a-cup works good for mixing biscuits on the trail. So what did I do with that spork? Replaced it with this...http://www.amazon.com/Coghlans-Cutlery-3-Piece-Stainless-Steel/dp/B000FAIPM0/ref=sr_1_6?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1395477295&sr=1-6&keywords=coghlans+forkI like having a metal fork for the trail, because it doubles as a whisk. And the Coghlans set fits INSIDE this mess kit if you put the handles UNDER the cups. I also secure the set with a thick rubber band, just to keep things nice and secure in my pack.By the way, the cutting board/strainer works VERY well with pasta, holding it all in the pan, and is very durable.
